Overview
Skyrim lies in the far north of Tamriel. Its landscape is defined by harsh mountains, frozen tundra, ancient ruins, and cold wilderness.
The region is closely associated with the Nords, who are large, resilient men and women with a strong natural and magical resistance to frost. Their culture values honor, strength, ancestry, battle, and the old traditions of the north.
Early History
Before the Nords came to dominate the region, Skyrim was originally inhabited by a race of Mer known as the Snow Elves.
After the Nordic-Falmer War, the Snow Elves were largely destroyed, scattered, or driven underground. In the aftermath, the Atmorans settled the land and established the foundations of what would become Nordic Skyrim.
Borders
Skyrim borders several major regions of Tamriel:
| Direction | Neighboring Region |
|---|---|
| East | Morrowind |
| South | Cyrodiil |
| Southwest | Hammerfell |
| West | High Rock |
Solstheim
The island of Solstheim was once connected politically and culturally to Skyrim. In later eras, however, it came under the sovereignty of Morrowind.
Solstheim lies northeast of Skyrim and remains an important borderland between Nordic and Dunmeri influence.
