Daedra

The Immortal Beings

Daedra are immortal beings widely believed to have refused participation in the creation of Mundus. Because they did not take part in that divine contract, they were not bound by the same limitations placed upon those who helped shape the mortal world. Even so, their influence reaches far beyond their own realms. In one form or another, Daedric power touches nearly every life in Tamriel.

They are often understood as counterparts — and in some ways opposites — to the Aedra, though the distinction is not always clear to ordinary folk. Many people loosely use the words “Aedra” and “Daedra” as equivalents for “gods” and “demons,” but this is an oversimplification.

The names themselves come from Elvish tradition. “Aedra” means “our ancestors,” while “Daedra” means “not our ancestors.” These terms reflect the way the elves understand the divine genealogy of the world.

The divide between Aedra and Daedra is commonly traced to the creation of Mundus. Most cultures teach that the Aedra played a central role in shaping Nirn and, through that act, became tied to the mortal world. The Daedra, by contrast, refused to take part in its creation. Because of this, they remained apart from Mundus, free from many of its constraints, yet still powerful enough to shape mortal affairs from beyond it.
